Before wood can be used in any kind of construction or wood projects, it first needs to be dried out. This means whether you're reclaiming wood from an old barnyard deconstruction on your property or you are interested in turning removed trees into lumber, the wood needs to be free of moisture before it can be used. However, drying out wood isn't as simple as letting it sit in the sun for a few days. Extracting all moisture from the wood takes time. The traditional way of thinking is to let the wood dry for a full year per inch of thickness. That means that reclaimed 2x4s would normally take two years of drying time before you can use the wood. Thankfully though, there is another option. With our iDry lumber kiln drying service, you can bypass this long waiting time and instead turn your reclaimed or removed wood into usable lumber in just a fraction of the time.

How Lumber Kiln Drying Works

Properly drying out wood using a kiln is just as much of an art as science. You don't want the wood to dry too quickly as it may result in splintering, cracking, or even catching the wood on the fire. But with the kiln on hand at Bloodhound Lumber & Land, which was built in Barre, Vermont, the combination of the kiln and computer applications can expertly monitor the wood.

Heat is used to dry out the wood, yet it becomes more susceptible to damage at higher temperatures. Hence, a vacuum dryer and water boiling combination process are used. Instead of using an open flame, heat is generated through the boiling water. Water boils at 212 F (100 C). However, the vacuum dryer removes the air and applies pressure to the wood, allowing water to heat and boil at a lower temperature.

Because the water heats at a lower temperature, allowing the wood to dry at a lower temperature. This reduces the chance of damage to the wood. Additionally, the vacuum dryer helps extract moisture from the wood faster than air dry. The vacuum dryer and kiln combination allows you to prepare wood in a fraction of the time it would normally take.

Drying Time Calculation

It takes approximately 1 week of drying time per inch of plank thickness, however, you also have to factor in how "green" the wood is and what species the wood is as some woods have a higher moisture content than others.

Our state of the art, iDry Kiln uses vacuum power to suck the water from the core to the shell, which is ideal to dry you wood quick. Our drying technique produces wood with excellent color and very little degrade.
